Gökhan Kirkil

Welcome! Thanks for visiting my website...

I am a research scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Department of Energy. I am interested in range of applications related to energy and environment.

Global warming and availability of renewable energy resources are among the biggest challenges for our world today. On the energy side; hydro, solar and wind power, on the environmental side; heat, particulate and contaminant transport (e.g. carbon) in atmosphere, rivers and oceans are gaining importance. All these applications involve flow structures whose scales range from mm-s (turbulence dissipation scales) to several km-s.

My research is about investigation of these multi-scale, multi-physics flow problems using high-end computational methods, such as Large Eddy Simulation and Detached Eddy Simulation as well as state-of-the-art field and experimental methods such as Particle Image Velocimetry. All these methods provide detailed quantitative  description of highly complex and time dependent nature of these flows.

My research interests can be summarized as:

· Renewable energy systems; particularly wind and hydro-power.

· Atmospheric flows and boundary layers; urban canopy flows.

· River and estuary mechanics.

· Particulate flows; transport of contaminants, pollutants and aerosols in the environment.

· Computational Fluid Dynamics, particularly Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) for flows in complex geometries. Applications in renewable energy systems, industrial and environmental flows.

· Algorithm development, turbulence modeling for complex turbulent flows.

· Parallel and large-scale computing.

· Advanced field and experimental measurement methods, particularly Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV).

· River ice engineering.
